Economic index rises sharply

A key forecasting gauge for the economy posted its largest gain in almost six years in December, suggesting the economy would emerge from recession within the next three months, a private research firm said Tuesday.
The Conference Board said its index of leading economic indicators rose 1.2 percent in December after a gain of 0.8 percent in November.
