City Council approves gay rights ordinance

The Tacoma City Council passed an ordinance Tuesday night making it a crime to discriminate against homosexuals. Supporters called the ordinance a victory for human rights, while critics cited the risk to small business owners who could be forced to defend expensive lawsuits. The law goes into effect May 5.
