The 22nd national census of the United States was conducted in the year 2000.
The results illustrate how the demographics of Pierce County have changed over the 1990s. The countys total population has grown by about 20 percent.
Its ethnic diversity has increased, bringing to the area a rich cultural heritage from all corners of the world.
To help people make sense of the census data as it pertains to this region, Pierce County has built a new Web application called CensusView 2000.
The site features a series of maps and charts that present census highlights on population, diversity, age, gender, households and families.
More in-depth information can be generated via data query tools. These tools can be used to drill into the data and create a variety of demographic reports for specific parts of the county such as cities, common places, census tracts or even an area around an address.
CensusView 2000 is an easy-to-use tool that can provide citizens, businesses, utility companies and non-profit organizations with useful demographic information about Pierce County.
The Web site uses geographic information systems (GIS) technology produced by Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) to process and analyze the census data, and to perform the interactive map displays and queries.
To access CensusView 2000, visit the Pierce County home page at www.piercecountywa.org and, under the How Can We Help You section, click on Interactive Services, and CensusView 2000. Or just visit:
