Celebrate STAR Center grand opening May 19

Metro Parks Tacoma will celebrate the grand opening of the South Tacoma Activity and Recreation (STAR) Center with a with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sat., May 19, beginning at 9 a.m.

Events throughout the day include a special flag-raising salute to veterans and active-duty military; an autograph session with two-time Olympic speed skating medalist J.R. Celski; South Tacoma Farmers mini-Market; 3-on-3 youth basketball tournament (pre-registration required online at here); and adult wheelchair basketball featuring players from the Tacoma Titans. Collect six stamps in your STAR Center Passport and receive a STAR Center Flexible Frisbee and be entered to win a variety of prizes.

You can beat the rush by stopping by the STAR Center between May 14 and May 18 to register in advance for your Grand Opening STAR Center Passport. Sound Transit will offer free parking in their lot at the corner of South Adams Street and South 60th Street A complimentary shuttle, running approximately every 15 minutes, will be available to transport you to and from your vehicle.

The $16 million, 32,000 square foot center is located at 3873 S. 66th St. on a shared campus with Gray Middle School, the new Boys & Girls Club’s Topping Hope Center, and the South End Recreation and Adventure (SERA) Campus field.
