The nearly-century-old J. M. Hendrickson Family Homestead in Tacoma belonged to several generations of one family that immigrated from Norway in 1888. The property — which includes an historic house, garage, and barn — was placed on Tacoma's Register of Historic Places three years ago. On Tuesday, Tacoma City Council granted the property owner's request to rescind the special designation, allowing a portion of it to be developed in an effort to address financial and medical hardships. The City of Tacoma is requesting a $60,000 grant from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office to help pay for a children's play area at a City-owned park near South 21st Street and Dock Street. The eco-friendly play area would feature a LEED-certified mat surface and landscaping with native plants. It would also expand the diversity of use within the park and draw more visitors and activities to the area. The project is a partnership between the City of Tacoma, Foss Waterway Development Authority, and The Henry Group, a private developer currently constructing a 161-unit, $32 million apartment building nearby. The City of Tacoma recently completed a project to restore the Children's Bell sculpture located along Ruston Way near the shores of Commencement Bay. The four-foot-tall bronze artwork was created in 2000 by artist Larry Anderson in order to celebrate the life, spirit, and accomplishments of Washington PAVE Founder and Director Marty Gentili, who passed away in 1993. The bell is decorated with images of children around the border and is meant to be rung by visitors. In April, area visitors noticed safety barricades were in place around the sculpture while the contractor spent several weeks completing restoration work on the Children's Bell sculpture.
