Arellano named new Assistant City Manager, CIO

Tacoma City Manager Eric Anderson announced yesterday that he has hired Rey Arellano for the position of Assistant City Manager and Chief Information Officer (CIO). Arellano was most recently the deputy city manager and chief information officer in San Diego, Calif., and will assume his duties with the City of Tacoma on July 17.

Arellano was selected from three finalists who interviewed with a hiring committee and the city manager earlier this month. He is recognized as an innovative and energetic leader who has broad strengths in technology, operations and personnel management, according to a statement released by the City of Tacoma.

“I am pleased Rey Arellano is joining our organization – he is a senior technology executive with a consistent history of achievement and success,” said Anderson. “I am confident his qualifications and energy will be a good fit.”

Arellano will receive a salary of $158,454.40 per year and other considerations including relocation expenses.

Prior to joining the City of San Diego, Arellano was a group project manager for Ryder Systems, Inc., in Miami, Fla., from 1999 through 2002. Before working for Ryder Systems, Arellano completed a 22-year career with the U.S. Navy as a nuclear trained submarine officer.

Arellano earned a Masters of Science in Information Management from Marymount University and a Bachelors of Science in Physics from the United States Naval Academy.
