City of Tacoma and Pierce County residents can drop off their unwanted electronics from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 11-12 at Cheney Stadium.
For $5 per carload citizens can recycle items such as vacuums, stereo equipment, telephones, small kitchen appliances and up to two computer monitors or televisions.
During the two-day event, Phillips Services, a commercial recycler from Auburn, will collect the non-working items.
They will disassemble each item and recycle the individual parts.
A non-profit agency will collect working items for reuse-another form of recycling.
Many electronic items contain hazardous materials such as lead, chromium, mercury, cadmium, nickel and zinc.
By recycling, these types of materials get disposed of responsibly.
Tacoma Solid Waste Management and Pierce County Environmental Services will pay the majority of the costs for recycling electronics collected at the event.
Panasonic and Sharp agreed to help fund the event by paying the recycling costs for products made by their companies.
City of Tacoma and Pierce County residents may bring items such as these to the electronics recycling event: VCRs, scanners, printers, alarm clocks, small kitchen appliances, modems, fax machines, stereo equipment, telephones, cell phones, vacuum cleaners, irons, curling irons, hairdryers and computers
Also accepted will be up to two televisions or computer monitors per carload. There is a $5 charge for each monitor or television above the limit.
Items not accepted include microwaves, smoke detectors or large appliances.
For more information about the electronics recycling event, Tacoma residents may call 253/591-5543.
Pierce County residents outside of Tacoma may call 253/798-2179
