Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg invites citizens to attend the first Livable Communities Fair Saturday, Feb. 9, and see for themselves what Pierce County and other agencies are doing to improve their quality of life in the face of rapid growth.
The fair – from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Tacoma Narrows Airport Hangar – will feature 20 forum and workshop presentations on the main and community stages and 110 informational booths. Admission and all activities are free.
I feel very strongly about the importance of improving our quality of life, Ladenburg said. That is a challenge considering how fast the South Sound area is growing. This fair is aimed at helping our communities and economy develop in ways that protect people and our environment.
Ladenburg will kick off the fair at 9 a.m. on the main stage. Presentations will be made throughout the day covering such topics as green power, the state of the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula watersheds, public safety, water quality, composting, water-wise landscaping, backyard wildlife sanctuary programs, maximizing garden space, 911 emergency phone system, farming in Pierce County and neighborhood emergency response.
Scenic tours will be offered by Zephyr Aviation for $15 a half hour per person. Other activities include a trout fishing pond, recycling arts and crafts, petting farm, wildlife, climb into a fire engine, Tacoma Rainiers mascot Rhubarb and live zoo animals from the Point Defiance Zoo.
The airport is located at 1202 26th Ave. N.W., Gig Harbor, just west of the Narrows Bridge.
