The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Salmon Recovery Funding Board are partnering with local groups to announce grant opportunities for community-based salmon restoration projects across the Puyallup-White and Chambers-Clover watersheds this summer.
The Puyallup-White/Chambers-Clover Community Salmon Fund will award grants not exceeding $50,000 to community groups, nonprofit organizations, tribes, and local governments to work with private landowners on habitat restoration projects. Projects must have community involvement and significant benefits to watershed health.
Preference will be given to projects that address local salmon recovery priorities and engage groups with histories of successfully implementing restoration projects and working with local community groups. Candidate projects include riparian plantings, invasive species removal, erosion control, culvert removals, and water quality improvement projects that involve the surrounding community.
“This program will provide substantial funding for restoration activities in the Puyallup-White and Chambers-Clover watersheds, strengthen community ties, and provide momentum for continued salmon recovery efforts,” said Roy Huberd of the Pierce County Lead Entity.
“We are excited to be working in an area with strong communities, active groups, important salmon habitat, and a history of successful grant projects” said Krystyna Wolniakowski, regional director for the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
The Salmon Recovery Funding Board (www.iac.wa.gov/srfb/) administers state and federal funds to protect and restore salmon habitat throughout Washington.
