Members of City Council are scheduled July 28 to hear the final reading of an ordinance that would amend the municipal code relating to automatic traffic camera systems, to implement a pilot program for the use of one automated traffic camera system to detect speed violations, as authorized by the Washington State Legislature. The City has utilized automated red light cameras to enhance safety at seven intersections throughout the City. This pilot program allows the use of the camera in any zone (the statute otherwise allows the use of cameras only in school speed zones) and would enable the City to address a serious chronic traffic safety issue.
