Tacoma Power has asked Bates Technical College’s Land Surveying program to perform an as-built survey of their recent placement of power lines associated with the recent improvements made to Wright Park in the City of Tacoma, including producing utility easements that describe the location of newly placed power lines.
This project provides students with the opportunity to work on a real time job in the industry, and saves Tacoma Power nearly $3,400. Students research several aspects of Wright Park, beginning with its donation to the city in 1886, to present day. The final drawing and descriptions of the park will be presented to Tacoma Power by mid-May.
“The Tacoma Power assignment presented a great opportunity for our students to be involved in a real-world project,” says Richard Lang, land surveying instructor at Bates. “Students now have experience with all phases of a typical survey job, beginning with client contact, through intermediate steps, and completing the project for client presentation. Bates is immensely appreciative to the people at Tacoma Power for offering this excellent opportunity.”
All thirteen students in the Land Surveying program are currently working on the project. The project is anticipated to last three months.
