WSDOT photos show severity of falling ice on Tacoma Narrows Bridges

If you were one of the many frustrated drivers stuck on State Route 16 between Tacoma and Gig Harbor on Friday when the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Washington State Patrol (WSP) closed both Tacoma Narrows Bridges for eight hours due to falling ice, photographs released Monday by WSDOT might offer some insight  into the thinking behind the closure. In one photograph (TOP), large chunks of ice cover lanes on the westbound SR 16 Tacoma Narrows Bridge. In another photograph (LEFT), a WSDOT maintenance employee holds a chunk of ice that fell from one of the bridges. Even the pedestrian path on the eastbound bridge wasn’t spared (RIGHT).
