Volunteers needed to build 'Playground by the Sound'

From Sept. 20-25, an army of untrained but enthusiastic volunteers will come together on an empty piece of land in the North Meadow of the Chambers Creek Properties and, in less than a week, build the so-called ‘Playground by the Sound.’

The playground was designed using the ideas and imagination of more than 1,000 elementary school children in the community. The 12,000-square-foot handicap-assessable playground is part of Chambers Creek Properties’ master site plan, a 900-acre regional public facility owned by Pierce County Sewer Utility.

Two professional playground consultants and 20 volunteer construction captains will oversee quality and lead the hundreds of volunteers on the site each day. They will be supported by food and child-care committees. Individuals and groups can volunteer for morning, afternoon and evening shifts. Organizers need carpenters, painters, strong backs, childcare volunteers, team captains, coordinators and moral support. Expert building skills are not necessary.
