TPU offers appliance rebates

The wait is over for people who’ve been holding off on buying a new refrigerator or clothes washer. Deal have arrived from Tacoma Public Utilities and Washington state in the form of rebates for energy-efficient appliances. Starting today, Tacoma Power customers who buy qualifying Energy Star-rated refrigerators and clothes washers are eligible for more than $300 in rebates.

When they buy a qualifying refrigerator and recycle their old one, Tacoma Power customers can get $75 from the state and $30 from the utility. When they buy a qualifying clothes washer, Tacoma Power and Tacoma Water customers can get $100 from the state and $100 from the utility.

In addition to saving on new appliances, people will save energy on their electric bills with new Energy Star appliances. Older refrigerators can use up to four times more energy than newer, more efficient models. Unplugging an old fridge can save people up to $140 in annual energy costs. Efficient clothes washers can save people up to $45 a year in combined water and sewer charges and another $40 on their electric bill.

Rebates from Washington state are part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The state portion of the rebate is available until Dec. 31, 2011, or until funds run out. Rebate applications are available online at http://www.KnowYourPower.com/cashforappliances or at Tacoma Power’s Energy Information Center at (253) 502-8377.
