A Tacoma construction company has been chosen as the latest recipient of the state’s most prestigious civics award for small companies. Korsmo Construction will receive the 2011 Corporations for Communities award in the small-company category, which honors exceptional Washington businesses that make community a priority. Secretary of State Sam Reed will present executives from Korsmo Construction with a National Association of Secretaries of State Medallion Award during a ceremony in his office on Nov. 2 at noon. The Medallion recognizes voter education efforts, civic engagement, government services and a commitment to giving back in the community. Korsmo Construction held the fifth annual Billy Stocking Special Olympics swim meet that served more than 200 special needs athletes; built and donated dozens of wooden bunk beds to the Tacoma downtown YMCA shelter; and coordinated with Lakewood Police Department, Forza and other contractors to donate time and materials to build the “Fallen Officers Memorial.” Corporations for Communities was launched in 2009 by Reed as a recognition program within the Secretary of State’s Corporations & Charities Division.
