Tacoma Housing Authority public meeting on Section 8 funding

The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is changing the way it funds the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program, retroactive to Jan. 1 of this year.

UNless HUD reverses the decision, Tacoma Housing Authority (THA) will potentially be forced to change the way it runs the housing voucher program.
HUD’s cuts have forced THA to stop issuing vouchers and pull back on vouchers not yet committed.

Other steps THA must consider include lowering the amount of rent paid, serving fewer extremely low-income people and terminating contracts with landlords.

THS is holding a public meeting to address these important issues. At the meeting, THA and the city will seek input on how to respond to HUD’s reduction in funding. This will affect Section 8 participants, landlords, service providers and the entire city.

Harlan Stewart, director of public housing with the Seattle HUD office, will be present to hear and respond to people’s concerns.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Thursday, May 27, at the Tacoma Public Utilities Auditorium, 3628 South 35th St.
