Tacoma developer breaks ground on indoor sports facility

After two years of planning, working with city officials and seeking out financing, South Sound Sports Ventures, Inc. broke ground on its new indoor sports facility at South 80th and Pine Street on November 8. The new facility will be called Pacific Sports Center and will house two indoor fields across 52,000 square feet.

The beginning of construction signifies a critical turning point for South Sound Sports Ventures CEO Marian Bowers. In 2006, Bowers cut the chains off the doors at The Soccer Center located on Bay Street in Tacoma’s Dome District. Bowers took the once failing facility, made upgrades and increased membership by tenfold creating one of the most successful indoor sports facilities in the region. Simultaneously, she resurrected the Tacoma Stars men’s professional indoor soccer team bringing back the excitement of soccer to the Tacoma area.

As her business grew she knew that the need for a larger facility with greater amenities for players and fans was becoming a necessity. She began plans for Pacific Sports Center. Her intent has always been to keep indoor sports affordable for players while maintaining the service her team is known for in an efficient, clean and safe facility. In line with Marian’s original plan she will not raise prices for league play.

Pacific Sports Center is slated to open mid-February 2012. The facility will not solely be limited to soccer; it will also play host to other sports leagues including lacrosse, traditional and flag football as well as baseball among others.
