School of Magical Strings harp classes begin Oct. 16

The School of Magical Strings is offering beginning and intermediate classes in Celtic Harp this fall in Seattle and Olalla. The term will run for five weeks.

Seattle classes begin Monday, October 16, at the Tara Academy of Irish Dance studio, 8551 Greenwood Ave N, Suite 4. Beginning class meets from 6 –7:30 pm, – the intermediate class 7:30 –9 pm.

Olalla classes begin Tuesday, October 17 at the “Magic Hill” Studio on the Kitsap Peninsula. The beginning class meets 6:00 – 7:30 pm, with the intermediate class 7:30 – 9:00 pm.

The method of instruction is based upon a very practical ‘hands-on’ approach to learning by ear, during which basic music theory is naturally revealed as the course progresses. Even students with no prior musical training will find this a refreshing and enjoyable experience as they learn captivating melodies from the Celtic tradition. In the beginning classes students will first learn the rudiments of harp technique and exercises followed with a delightful repertoire of traditional Irish and Welsh melodies. The intermediate class will expand repertoire, introducing students to pieces in a variety of forms and modes along with ideas for arranging and ornamentation. The class fee for the five-week term is $150 plus a $10 registration fee. Harps are available for rent or purchase from the instructor, Philip Boulding.  Students can register directly online at http://magicalstrings.com/Form_School_Reg.php
