“R.U. Dick Skarshaug, the treasurer of ALVA Federal Credit Union – now American Lake Credit Union – in Tacoma from 1950 to 1993, passed away on March 8. He was 90.Skarshaug managed ALVA FCU, which served Veterans’ Administration Medical Center employees, from his desk drawer until the credit union’s growth necessitated a move into a Quonset hut at the medical center at American Lake. The credit union was then relocated to one of the main VA buildings and eventually was housed in its own building in 1986.Skarshaug stepped aside as the active manager in 1981, remaining as the treasurer and guide for the credit union. Denise Reagan, now of Telco Community Credit Union, was then appointed manager.Skarshaug served in a number of chapter posts for the Washington Credit Union League and was the league’s chairman for two terms. During his tenure as chairman, the league launched a data processing system through its business affiliate, League Services, Inc.Dick’s prudent and careful management of the credit union left it in a strong position to prosper and serve its members, said Jim Huggins, current president of American Lake Credit Union. He will be sorely missed.Skarshaug is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Skarshaug of Korea, and his son Thomas Skarshaug of Tacoma.”
