Public Mural coming to Lincoln District

Paint the Street is a participatory public art project – community members are invited to help paint an intersection during this fun community event

A new mural will soon grace Tacoma’s streets – literally. The chosen site is the intersection of South 39th and J Street in the Lincoln District. It’s part of a community-inspired mural project called Paint the Street, and is one of 11 creative temporary projects funded by the City of Tacoma’s Lincoln District Revitalization Project.

The colorful artwork will be created by local visual artist Dionne Bonner. This original work will be painted directly on the pavement using non-toxic traffic marking paint. It will cover the entire intersection with a vibrant mural reflecting the character of the Lincoln District neighborhood. The design was created by Bonner, based on considerable input from people living in the neighborhood.

Social and Economic Benefits of the Community Street Mural:

This street art project serves many valuable purposes. First, it creates a safer intersection for pedestrians and cyclists by encouraging drivers to slow down to admire and acknowledge the work. Second, it enhances community identity, pride, and solidarity. Third, it helps revitalize the intersection through bright colors and images that reflect the neighborhood’s unique history and character.

“Using creativity to bring people together, and make a positive impact is one of the most fulfilling things I can do as an artist.” ~ Dionne Bonner
