Port of Tacoma terminals shut down again following fatality *UPDATE*

Port of Tacoma officials announced Monday morning that all terminals have been closed following a fatal accident fatality at one of their terminals.

“Because of a fatality this morning at a Port of Tacoma terminal, operations will be shut down until 8 a.m. Tues., March 26,” said Port of Tacoma spokesperson Tara Mattina. “The cause of death is currently under investigation. Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends.”

Details of the accident fatality were not immediately available.

This is the second fatality at the port in one month. On March 12, a worker died in an industrial accident at Pierce County Terminal.

UPDATE Mon., March 25 @ 11:45 a.m. — Port of Tacoma officials provide the following information:

The death this morning at a Port of Tacoma terminal does not appear to be the result of an industrial accident. According to the coroner, it is a probable cardiac-related death. The investigation is still ongoing.

UPDATE Mon., March 25 @ 4:53 p.m. — Pacific Crane Maintenance Company released the following statement:

We were saddened to learn that one of our workers, a long-time ILWU member, passed away this morning as a result of what appears to be natural causes at a job site in Tacoma. The employee was found unconscious near his maintenance truck, and paramedics were called immediately, but were unable to revive him. Preliminary reports indicate that he was not involved in any sort of industrial accident or injury. Our thoughts and prayers go out to our employee’s family and friends at this difficult time.
