Pierce Transit offering free rides in December

As part of a campaign to say thanks to the community, Pierce Transit is offering free bus rides every Sunday during the month of December.

Because Pierce County voters supported local public transportation on Feb. 5 of this year, Pierce Transit was able to restore bus service that was cut following the elimination of the Motor Vehicle Excise Tax.

Especially hard hit was the Sunday service. Some routes were eliminated completely while others were reduced to hourly service.

In September, Pierce Transit was able to replace most of the service that was cut and to add service where it’s never been before.

The highlights include five routes with new or restored Sunday service, seven routes with increased frequency on Sunday, and a new route – 501 – serving Tacoma, Fife, Milton, the Weyerhaeuser Campus and Federal Way.
Even more improvements are scheduled for February 2003 in East Pierce County.

Pierce Transit is inviting people to return to using the bus or to give it a try for the first time.

For those that are interested in holiday shopping, Pierce Transit operates transit centers located at the Tacoma Mall, Lakewood Towne Center, South Hill Mall, Downtown Tacoma, Lincoln Plaza, and has routes serving many other shopping centers throughout the area.

You can find out more about Pierce Transit local routes and schedules by calling a customer services representative at 253/581-8000.
