City seeks artist to create law enforcement memorials

The Tacoma Police Department (TPD) is seeking an artist or artist team from Washington State to create a memorial honoring the 10 fallen officers from the City of Tacoma who were killed in the line of duty. Located at the new TPD Headquarters Building, with five smaller satellites at substation sites, this memorial will recognize the fallen officers, provide a contemplative space for visitors and help observe the importance that the police contribute to the community.

In March of 2004, the police department received a Law Enforcement Tribute Grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to support the project. The total budget for the project is $150,000, and the deadline for submissions is June 15.

Artists interested in applying for the projects may download the guidelines and application information at http://www.tacomaculture.org under arts, resource library and calls to artists. Requests for a hard copy prospectus may be obtained by calling (253) 591-5191, by e-mail at amcbride@cityoftacoma.org or in person at the Tacoma Arts Commission, 747 Market St., #1036, Tacoma, WA 98402.
